Emergency Contraception: Essential Information for Pharmacists
Live CE webinar provides you with all you need to know about emergency contraception and provides answers to your questions regarding its availability and use.
According to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC), in 2001, approximately on e-half of pregnancies in the United States were unintended. In 1999, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first levonorgestrel-only emergency contraceptive (EC) for prescription use. In 2006, the FDA widened access to this EC by approving over-the-counter (OTC) sales to consumers that were 18 years of age and older. Recently, the FDA further increased access to this medication by allowing OTC sales to include individuals 17 years of age; those less than 17 years of age would still require a prescription.
Pharmacists can help to reduce the barriers that limit the use of ECs by improving patient access and being available to answer questions about the use of this medication.
For pharmacists and other health care professionals, this webinar will give you the tools you need to:
- Explain the consequences of unintended pregnancy
- Compare and contrast emergency contraceptive methods
- Discuss the mechanism of action, efficacy, dosing, safety, and tolerability of progestin-only emergency contraception
- Counsel patients regarding the proper use of emergency contraception
- Develop appropriate responses to the most frequently asked questions about emergency contraception
The answers to these questions, and more, can be found by signing up for this webinar on LivePharmacyCE.com.
